Monday and Tuesday our Food Sovereignty and Sustainable Agriculture class took a trip to Puerto Viejo, Sarapiqui to tour 3 examples of Costa Rican Agriculture. The first was a Dole Banana Plantation, next a chocolate tutorial in the Tirimbina Nature Reserve, and last a Corsicana Organic Pineapple Plantation.
The ride there crossed over some mountains and through the Parque Nacional Braulio Carrillo (it reminded me of driving to JMU but with leaves the size of my body and fresh spring waterfalls covering the mountain walls). We passed through the longest tunnel in Costa Rica to pass through a mountain, and finally arrived in Sarapiqui after 2.5 hours of driving. We stopped and had lunch then began the tour marathon. In Ciudad Colon it usually reaches around 75 *F (peaking around 2-3pm then dropping quickly as the sun goes down and the wind picks up to hurricane gale force speeds!!) but in Sarapiqui on the Caribbean side it was noticeably hotter (closer to 85*F) and especially muggy.
