Today in GSCI we visited Radical Roots farm right here in the Valley. IT WAS AWESOME! It absolutely broke the stereotype of simple country-folk growing tomatoes in the boonies. Yes, it was kind of in the middle of nowhere but that's kind of unavoidable in the farm business. The co-owner gave us a tour (a graduate of JMU... represent!) of the farm. Everything in the system has more than one purpose in order to eliminate degredation of the environment and also excess costs. For example: they own about 200 chickens which are fenced in over a crop bed but have plenty of room to roam around. They are relocated from bed to bed periodically to allow their poop to fertilize each bed at some point. The chickens also eat any bugs eliminating the need for pesticides, saving our planet from toxic run-off, and making feeding the chickens cheap because bugs are free! There were a ton of other examples but I should really get to my homework so check out their website, go visit the farm, or talk to them at the Farmer's Market in H-Burg and also two in C-Ville! Totally rad.... :)
