The Alleged Payasos

Our Spanish teacher told us that it is a Ciudad Colon tradition to start any major event in the town (which in this case is the National Arts Festival) to begin it with a parade at 5 in the "madruga" with drums and bands and weird clown things with giant plaster heads who people chase (the "payasos"), and sometimes those people get chased back.

I decided to go 50% because our teacher begged us to rep' the gringos (apparently it's her responsibility as our mentor in tico culture to get us out to these events and she hasn't had much success in past years getting college students out and about at 5am.)

The other 50% was because I was curious just how huge these heads would be and how they might run with them...

So Jeni, Vero, and myself got up at 5am, started walking at 5:10 am, and saw my spanish professor walking home when we were almost to the center where we could hear the band playing and the drums pounding. Apparently the payasos never showed up...

That's the thing with Costa Rica: sometimes they show up late, sometimes they don't show up at all...
Silver lining! This beautiful Ciudad Colon sunrise!!
